Is affiliate marketing dead?
I see this question a lot and I see people talking down affiliate marketing say it’s not a legit practice or there’s no way to make money at it anymore, and I’m sure that since you’re here reading this, you’ve heard a lot of that buzz also.
So in this article, I’d like to discuss whether or not affiliate marketing is actually dead, whether you can make a decent living at it in the year 2021, and what you need to know if you want to pursue a career as an affiliate marketer.
Here’s the short answer
The short answer is that affiliate marketing isn’t dead.
I’ve heard this about sales funnels as well. People claiming that SALES FUNNELS are dead. But in reality, they just aren’t. None of it is.
Why do I think this?
I don’t think affiliate marketing is dead because I’m friends with people on Facebook that are making tens of thousands, if not $100,000 a month just with affiliate marketing.
There are other ways that you can add your own products to affiliate marketing to make it even more lucrative, but seeing people that I personally know and have interacted with make a really great living at it lets me know that it’s not dead.
Why are people saying that it’s dead?
People usually say that something is dead if they want attention for whatever it is that they’re doing.
They’ll say that sales funnels are dead because they have their own way of marketing that they’re trying to promote. They’re trying to differentiate themselves from all the other gurus out there that are pushing sales funnels and kind of shoving them down people’s throats.
And they want to become a thought leader by pulling people away who have tried sales funnels and haven’t really been successful. They’re trying to catch that defect of people that are burned out on sales funnels and lead them in a new direction.
The same thing is true for affiliate marketing.
The people who have tried to be successful at affiliate marketing and have failed are kind of burnt out on the idea, and they’re looking for a new path, a new way to make money online.
And they find this person that’s saying that affiliate marketing is dead. Thus they are more likely to accept that their defeat was because of a defective strategy, and not because they couldn’t get it to work. They then go chasing this new guru who’s telling them it’s not their fault.
They call this theory in marketing the Blue Ocean, people trying to find their own path and lead people into a blue ocean of opportunity, a new way of doing things.
That’s all well and good. But it’s misleading in the fact that while their new way may work, they’re also creating a buzz that the old way does it still work? And it does.
How is affiliate marketing still alive?
Affiliate marketing is still alive, but it has changed a lot over the years.
What used to be as easy as taking an affiliate link and plastering it all over Facebook and other social media platforms and getting clicks from your family and friends, going to a forum and posting a link or posting a link and a comment on a blog.
All of these ways are considered spammy.
And that is why that form of affiliate marketing is actually dead, because you’re just annoying people.
You’re not providing them any value. You’re just trying to make a quick buck.
You don’t want to be the person who’s just trying to make a quick buck with affiliate marketing. Our goal is to help people solve their problems. So in order to do that, we need to do the proper way of affiliate marketing, and that is by teaching people and providing them value and knowing what their problem is well enough that we know that the affiliate offer that we’re promoting is going to be the solution that they ultimately need to solve their problem and reach that next stage in their life.
Whether that next step be personal, financial, business, whatever it is, it’s our job to try and get them to that solution and that next step.
